While the energy sector is well established with its mature, international markets and strong tradition of public intervention, several factors are fundamentally reshaping energy industries and creating new market dynamics. These factors include technological innovation, economic globalization, evolving regulations, and growing environmental and resource constraints.

Research at the Energy and Environmental Policy Department (LEPII-EPE) provides:
- insights from applied economics on the emerging dynamics of international energy markets and industries, and
- economic analyses to support the development of robust climate change policies, taking into account the evolving sectoral context.

EPE research helps to identify economically sound pathways to sustainable development, taking into account upstream limits to energy resource availability and downstream constraints of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
